On Tuesday, May 6, we’re inviting the community to the [Nickelodeon Theatre](https://nickelodeon.org/events/thestreetproject/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJz3cJleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHrNrmq2D-QWm1iZP6Dtvx1NOaaLBmsm5o8OTo1xZWt08IrsGkQvyvI2AFT_Z_aem_mNlwuM5vwsy_BLyHJVDMOw#buynow) for a free screening of [*The Street Project*](https://www.thestreetproject.com), a documentary about how communities are working to make their streets safer for people who walk, bike, and roll.
Columbia ranks [12th most dangerous](https://smartgrowthamerica.org/dangerous-by-design/) in the country for people walking. South Carolina ranks as the third most dangerous state in the USA. These numbers reflect a serious problem in our region: one I know many of us see daily in car crashes around town, missing sidewalks, unsafe bike routes, and streets that don’t feel built for people.
*The Street Project* highlights what led to this moment and what can be done about it. It features stories from across the country and abroad that show how communities are rethinking transportation, advocating for change, and creating safer, more connected places to live.
After the film, we’ll host a panel conversation featuring local planners, advocates, agency staff, and community leaders. We’ll talk about what’s already happening here in the Midlands, where the gaps are, and what it will take to move Columbia forward.
Cola Town Bike Collective is a nonprofit based in Columbia. Through our [Reliable Transportation Initiative](https://colatownbikes.com/reliable-transportation-initiative/), we’ve given away over 1,250 bikes and completed thousands of free repairs to help people get to work, medical care, and essential services. We've helped install over a dozen yellow bike repair stations across Cola & West Cola. We are deeply rooted in our community, and our work goes beyond giving bikes away. it’s about fighting for safer streets, better access, and a more connected Columbia and beyond.
That’s why we’ve launched **ColaTownWalkBike**, currently living on this blog, a way for our advocacy and outreach to reach more people.
The fight for a safer, more livable Columbia involves all of us! We hope you’ll join us. Y'all come!
